Autumn Golf Croquet Handicap Carnival
19-22 March 2009
Young Croquet Club

The fifth and largest Autumn Golf Croquet carnival with forty-two players participating was held in near perfect weather although a little too warm at times with players resorting to wearing cold neck bands to help cool down and restore their thinking powers?

The club were lucky enough to make use of "Another Room", a new double disabled toilet block actually completed the day before the carnival began. This was a huge improvement for club facilities and thanks to the Young Council for their generous help in providing this.

The Carnival Dinner was on Friday night with fifty players and friends enjoying a delicious meal at the Commercial Hotel.

Our Tournament Referee was :- Graham Howie from Paynesville, Victoria.
Deputy :- Jim Clement from Sarsfield, Victoria
John Tainsh from Deniliquin with other qualified referee players also helped over the four days of play. Our thanks to them for many hours spent on their feet.

Three blocks of seven (round robin) doubles were played on the first day and completed on the second. The winners were :-

Block A winners John Compton (Maitland) and Joy Lavette (Toronto) - runners up Bill Haines (Blue Mountains) and Nan Saint-John (Southern Highlands)
Block B winners Pat Moroney (Jamberoo) and Carol Turner (Young) - runners up Ray Farrell (Orange) and Robyn Compton (Maitland)
Block C winners Mike Speak (Blue Mountains) Martin Atkins (Orange) - runners up Margaret Sawers (Nowra) and Jackie Woolfe (Young)

Six blocks of seven (round robin) singles were then played until completed on Sunday afternoon.

Block A winner Garry Fensom (Wollongong) - runner up John Compton (Maitland)
Block B winner Yvonne Grattan (Canberra) - runner up Isabell Howe (Deniliquin)
Block C winner Shirley Page (Toronto) - runner up Don Simpson (Young)
Block D winner Carol Turner (Young) - runner up Pat Nowlan (Young)
Block E winner Helen James (Orange) - runner up Mary Dunn (Nowra)
Block F winner Pam Kane (Rich River) - runner up Mike Speak (Blue Mountains)

At the conclusion of play an afternoon tea and presentation of awards completed the carnival.

Many complimentary remarks were made about the running of the Carnival with players wishing to return next year to participate again. I must say I had a wonderful tournament committee and a team of hard working and dedicated members to help. Without them it could not have been the success it was.
