Golf Croquet Carnival
10-12 Sep 2014
Port Macquarie Croquet Club

34 players from 12 different clubs joined 2 local players in the Port Macquarie annual golf croquet carnival. The 32 players who registered first played in the doubles competition and all 36 featured in the singles. The weather forecast was not encouraging; a violent rain/hail/thunderstorm forced players from the lawns on the first day for half an hour or so, but otherwise play was continuous and generally under cloudless skies.
For the doubles competition, the format followed that of the previous year with the top 8 players seeded to play in Block A, the next 8 playing in Block B and so on. The competition was fierce and provided the ideal practice each morning before the singles matches took place. The winners in Blocks A, B and D were undefeated, while the winners in Block C were decided after a three-way countback. Final results were :-

Block A Bill Munns (Toronto) and Pat Moroney (Jamberoo)
Block B Shirley Page (Toronto) and Yvonne Bagnall (Gloucester)
Block C Bev Lopez (Macquarie City) and Denis Forbes (Urunga)
Block D Dot Moroney (Jamberoo) and Elaine Leech (Gloucester)

In the singles competition, Joe Dimech won all his 5 matches in Block A, as did John Mitchell in Block F. Pat and Dot Moroney also continued on their winning ways, completing their 3 days without a loss in either singles or doubles. Pat was pressed hard in Block B by local player Sue Moss in her first ever Golf Croquet carnival. Sue is better known as an Association player but is starting to strike fear in the hearts of all low handicappers at Golf Croquet too. The other local player, Doug Parkinson, and Lorraine Craig proved too strong for their opposition but only just. Final results were :-

Block A Winner Joe Dimech (Taree) Runner-up Peter Coles (Forster)
Block B Winner Pat Moroney (Jamberoo) Runner-up Sue Moss (Port Macquarie)
Block C Winner Doug Parkinson (Port Macquarie) Runner-up Yvonne Bagnall (Gloucester)
Block D Winner Lorraine Craig (Macquarie City) Runner-up Clare Vize (Forster)
Block E Winner Dot Moroney (Jamberoo) Runner-up Helen McKay (Newcastle National Park)
Block F Winner John Mitchell (Urunga) Runner-up Ellen Puxty Johansen (Sawtell)

Players were kept well fed and nourished by Anne Freeman and her cohorts. Raffle prizes each day were donated by Susan Klecka, Sylvia Andrews and Joan Fernie. Port Macquarie members contributed to the carnival as always in various roles – waiters and waitresses, washers-up, referees et al – maintaining the traditionally high standards of hospitality that visitors to Port Macquarie enjoy.

All players expressed the wish to return next year; the Port Macquarie Club looks forward to welcoming them again.
