Golf Croquet Carnival
14-16 Sep 2016
Port Macquarie Croquet Club

Light rain greeted the thirty-six players from thirteen different clubs. The rather gloomy forecast for the next three days was not encouraging. However, after about three hours no more raincoats were needed for the rest of the tournament.

The doubles competition was held early each morning, with four seeded divisions of eight players. This was good practice for the more serious singles competition.

The doubles results were:-

Block A Elaine Coles (Forster) and Sandy Coutts (Forster)
Block B Elizabeth Woods (South West Rocks) and Lyn Dimech (Taree)
Block C Shirley Page (Toronto) and Ian Sullivan (Forster)
Block D Joseph de Giovanni (Manly) and Elaine Leech (Gloucester).

In the singles competition there were many closely fought games, with nineteen results determined at hoop 13. Joe Dimech and Dianne Cheetham were the only undefeated players.

The singles results were:-

Block A Winner Joe Dimech (Taree) Runner-up Peter Coles (Forster)
Block B Winner Dianne Cheetham (Newcastle National Park) Runner-up Mary Greig (Forster)
Block C Winner Terry Cheetham (Newcastle National Park) Runner-up Wendy Forbes (Urunga)
Block D Winner Shirley Page (Toronto) Runner-up Ian Sullivan (Forster)
Block E Winner Joseph de Giovanni (Manly) Runner-up Jan Sullivan (Forster)
Block F Winner Judy Chidgey (Newcastle National Park) Runner-up Helen Chalmers (Newcastle National Park)

Erlinda Attwater and Antoinette Jackson kept the players well fed, thanks to the contributions of cakes and slices from many of our members. Sue Moss and Sue Shenton catered for the dinner after the presentation of prizes. Jane Martin organised the daily raffles, with four prizes each day. Our greenkeeper, Shorty, Robin Shenton, Kevin Attwater and Graeme Meers set up the courts early each morning. Once again, Herman Camphuis provided free action shots of players and their families. One very special photo was of the101 year old mother of Robyn Roberts who came to watch Robyn play. These great photos, taken by Herman, always give me the challenge of making a carnival collage. This is emailed to all players, giving them a momento of the carnival. A larger, coloured collage may be seen on our club website.

John Hincks, as Tournament Referee, was able to place a referee on each singles game thanks to the help of so many of the players and our club members. Special thanks goes to non-player, Pat Johnston from Forster, who refereed many games throughout the carnival.

The carnival secretary, Kevin Attwater, worked diligently both before and during the carnival. Having to replace nineteen people, who withdrew in the previous couple of months, was no mean feat.

The 2017 carnival will be held at a similar time next year. Get your forms early, either from the CNSW website or from your club notice board, as we are never able to include all the players who would like to take part.
