The Maitland Mutual Ricochet Challenge

The Maitland Croquet Club conducted the World’s first Individual Doubles Ricochet Challenge over two days 15th and 16th October. This novel event was sponsored by the Maitland Mutual.

32 players were divided into 4 groups of 8 ranked (as best we could) by GC and AC handicaps. Each player in each group partnered every other member of the group in a doubles match within the group. This meant 7 doubles matches were played over the 2 days. Each match was 1¼ hours or 14 points. 5 peg outs occurred over the competition. Each player in a pair accumulated the score of the team and carried that score into the next round. The block winner was the player with the most accumulated hoops.

The competition went well, weather was great and the players enjoyed the unique challenge of the format. Everyone learnt more about the playing of Ricochet.

The organisers were so pleased with the Individual Pairs concept that the Club will now investigate how it can be improved for next time and how it can be used as a basis for a GC Competition.
