Golf Croquet Carnival
11-13 Sep 2019
Port Macquarie Croquet Club

27 players came to Port Macquarie representing clubs from Jamberoo to Sawtell. A local player was added to the seeded draw so that the singles competition was played in 4 divisions of 7 players each. A doubles competition was played at the beginning of each day as a social event and a warm-up event. Each singles division had a local player added and the resultant pairings were seeded in 4 groups of 8. Almost all pairings were of players from 2 different clubs, which helped to increase the social atmosphere of the 3 days, although the games were no less competitive.

Cool weather helped to provide pleasant playing conditions and all divisions, both in singles and doubles were keenly contested. Indeed, only one player remained unbeaten over the 3 days - Kevin Attwater from Port Macquarie - although his week was not perfect after his loss in the doubles to a pairing which included his wife Erlinda.

In Doubles the winners were as follows :-

Block A Peter Coles (Forster) & Ruth Mulvaney (Toronto)
Block B Pam Wiemers (Toronto) & Erlinda Attwater (Port Macquarie)
Block C Kay Elliott (S.W. Rocks) & Christine Broad (Port Macquarie)
Block D Doreen Coombes (Sawtell) & Robyn Hehir (Smithtown)

In Singles the prizewinners were :-

Block A Winner Gary Barenthien (Independent) Runner-up Kevin Parkes (Toronto)
Block B Winner Kevin Attwater (Port Macquarie) Runner-up Jim Timbs (Nelson Bay)
Block C Winner Laurie Lawrence (Nelson Bay) Runner-up Steve Milton (Jamberoo)
Block D Winner Sharon Saxton (S.W. Rocks) Runner-up Doreen Coombes (Sawtell)

As always, members of the Port Macquarie Croquet Club supported the carnival by helping in the kitchen, providing finger food all day, donating items for 14 raffle prizes and generally making our visiting players feel comfortable and welcome. As usual the club provided a free 2 course meal at the presentations, which caused some surprise among players visiting for the first time. The awards were presented by a representative of the Westport Club, Jenny Edmunds, and by our Patron Peta Pinson, the Mayor of the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.

The collage which accompanies this report was compiled by Bridget Earle and is available on our website in a size which enables suitable copying.

We intend to organise a similar carnival next year; clubs will be informed when entries open.
