Silver Doubles, 13th - 15th February 2006

The Silver Doubles were played at Tempe from 13 to 15 February 2006 with 6 pairs only.

There was some outstanding play from Martyn Prins and Mike Hughes from Mosman club and Neil Hardie from Cammeray club - Martyn had breaks of 8 & 12, Mike - a bronze player - breaks of 8 & 9 and Neil a break of 9, this was advanced play.

Martyn and Mike had the only 2 peg outs of the competition and won all 5 games. With 1 game to be completed there were 4 teams with 2 wins each and 1 team with 1 win - so it could be anyone`s game. This was a tightly contested competition for 2nd place.

The players all enjoyed the competition and commented on the good sportsmanship and friendliness throughout the games.

Thanks to all players for being prompt and assisting with the lawns morning and afternoon.

Thanks also to the tournament referee and all referees for their assistance.

The winners were Martyn Prins & Mike Hughes
The runners up were Patricia Clark & Marie Waterman

Footnote - while this competition was in progress, there were some very busy "carpenters" (John Hanscomb, Harry Taylor and John Eddes) renovating rooms at the rear of the club to be used for the managers office, etc. Thanks to these hard working people.

Gold Doubles, 20th - 23rd February 2006

The NSW gold doubles was played from 20th to 23rd February 2006 with very humid weather throughout.

Firstly we welcome back to Tempe Mal Russell - good to see him here, he is worth watching for his speed around the lawn, in one game he made a break of 5, on came his opponent missed his roquet, on came Mal made a break of 6, all done within 11 minutes. Also welcome to Mark Callan for his first competition at Tempe and in one game he made a break of 9 he also made other breaks during the games.

Some of the games were very close, Bill Coull & Vic Aberley won 20 against Michael Mills & David Griffiths 19 in extra time, Fay Stove & Mark Callan 14 beat Michael Mills & David Griffiths 13 after time was called. Stephen Howes & Alison Sharpe 17 beat Bill Coull & Vic Aberley 16 and Martyn Prins & Mal Russell 17 beat Fay Stove & Mark Callan 16 on the bell. There were 6 peg outs during the competition.

One of the players(and I`m not saying who) called his playing partner whale, so we asked him why, Oh! he said, thats because we are having a whale of a time, which we all appreciated, so you see every one was enjoying their selves and thats what the game is all about and we would love to see all you people who havent come to Tempe -- do come and join in the fun, meet other players, and it also helps to improve your game.

The games finished with one team with 4 wins five teams with 3 wins and one team with 2 wins.

Congratulations not only to the winners and runners up but to all players because the games were so close and exciting.

Thanks to the referees and the Tournament referee who attended to the games, also to all players for setting up the courts and putting everything away including the glasses.

The Winners were Stephen Howes & Alison Sharpe.

Runners up were Michael Mills & David Griffiths.

NSW Golf Croquet Handicap - Singles, 7th - 9th March 2006

The Golf Croquet handicap Singles was held from 6 - 8 March, 2006. Jacky McDonald not happy with running 7 & 8 with one stroke, just to prove she can do it, ran hoops 7 & 8 in another game - well done Jacky.

There were only 2 games not finished with in the time limit all other games scored 7 hoops (68 games).

The Winner of Block A - Ron Johnstone
Runner up of Block A - Bill Cooper
The winner of Block B - John Eddes
Runner up of Block B - Jacky McDonald

The grand final was played between John Eddes and Ron Johnstone a very close game, each player scoring hoop for hoop. On hoop 10 the score being 5 all, then John scored hoop 11, score then being 6 to 5 in favour of John. Hoop 12 was a tough fight between John and Ron both having good changes and both knocking each other away , eventually won by John making the final score 7 to 5.

Overall winner - John Eddes
Runner up - Ron Johnstone

Thanks to all the players for their help on and off the lawns, also to all the referees for standing in all the heat and remaining calm during the games, a job well done.

We moved into our new rooms for this tournament and it was heavenly, well almost, the managers have a room, players have a room to leave their gear in and we have our own toilets. It still has a little work to be done till we bring the urn, tea, and coffee etc over but a heap of thanks go to Harry Taylor, John Hanscomb, John Eddes and Neil Hartley for all the carpentry and cleaning up also to Peter Landrebe who is painting the rooms.

Senior Citizens Week, 13th - 17th March 2006

A very disappointing representation of Clubs for this event - 5 clubs from Country area and 4 from the Metropolitan area. Those who participated enjoyed the competition but were disappointed with the number of games played.

Fay Stove withdrew having sprained her ankle while walking the dog.

The finalists were Mike Hughes from Mosman and John Harris Canberra.

Both players played a very controlled, intelligent game with Mike defeating John 24-22.

Congratulations Mike & John and to all players for their commitment to this competition.

Well done !

Bronze Singles, 27th - 30th March 2006

There were 8 players in this competition. Three of these had not competed in a CNSW event before.

This was an 18 point game. The best break was made by Ros Johnstone with a break of 7.

Michael Hughes started the competition with a handicap of 16 and finished with a handicap of 12. Michael was the overall winner and David Brook - competing in his first competition - was the runner up.

Thanks to the players who arrived early to set up the lawns, to the referees and especially to Robin Potter, Tournament Referee.

The competition ran very smoothly with a little rain here and there but not enough to interfere with play and no withdrawals.

Congratulations to all players.

Fransted Trophy, 14th - 17th April 2006

The Fransted trophy was played at Tempe on the 14th to 17th April 2006. We had beautiful days for the tournament and all players enjoyed their games and friendships, the players on lower handicaps had a tough job to beat those players on 16 to 20 with picket fences facing them.

One game between Ros Johnstone and John Eddes was the most exciting of the days, with John showing those of us still riveted to the spot, how croquet should be played, near the end of the game Ros had one clip on penalt and one clip on rover having used all her bisques through out the game, John has one clip on the peg and one clip still on hoop 1 its now his turn to play and he made his roquet and makes hoop 1 when time is called, now as Ros has one more turn, it means John has to go round and peg out both his balls to win and he did it -- thats where he showed us all how to play -- well done John.

The semi-finals was played between John Fransen and Marie Waterman with John winning 14 to 13; the other semi-final was between John Eddes and Lesley Fransen with John winning 26 to 10.

The Final was between John Fransen and John Eddes with John Eddes winning by 23 to 20. A point of interest: John Eddes had a total of 102 bisques against him and even so he still managed to win the Fransted trophy.

Congratulations to the winner John Eddes and to the runner up John Fransen.

Thanks go to all the players and also to the referees for their valued help during the tournament.

Silver Singles, 25th - 28th April 2006

Eight players contested this event, and the standard of play was the best that I have managed or refereed. By playing in State Championships, players are better able to assess their standard of play. They are not just playing their mates in the club, but are playing players whom they may never have played against before.

The standard of play of three of the contestants, Alan Walsh, Mike Hughes and John Harris would do credit to any Gold Competition. An example of this was a game in which Alan made breaks of 7 and 12, ending each break with a very well constructed leaves. He followed this with a game in which he made breaks of 7 & 13. In total there were 12 peg outs, 11 by these 3 players.

The winner was Alan Walsh with 7 wins. Mike Hughes was the runner-up with 6 wins followed by John Harris with 5 wins.

I would especially like to thank Win Russell, who, was my assistant manager, but carried out all the managerial duties on both the Wednesday and Thursday, thus reliving me to referee on both days. Also thank you Rita Johnson who took over as manager on the final day as I had medical appointments.

The referees are also to be thanked for their assistance to Joan Milthorpe, the tournament referee, who, is recovering from serious illness.

This is a timely reminder to all players that we need more of you to come forward and become referees. You can learn a lot about the game by refereeing and this is a good way of giving back to the sport.

More managers are also needed as this task is falling to the same few and competitions cannot go on without managers and referees.

It was pleasing to note that, with one exception, all the players were dressed in white, thus adhering to the dress standard of Club Uniform or predominately white, as set out in the NSW Handbook. Incidentally, I have noted that this handbook is not readily available to players, in fact, I doubt if there are more than a few, outside the executive, who know about it.

Gold Singles, 5th - 9th May 2006

There were 10 entrants in this event which was held at Tempe in mostly ideal conditions.

All matches were played in a very sportsman like manner.

There could be an improvement in court courtesy. Players please be aware of others on the lawn before you begin play.

Several good breaks were made - the most significant, a break of 10 by Martyn Prins and a break of 12 by Alix Verge. Also there were several peg-outs.

Thank you to all the Referees and especially Marie Waterman - Tournament Referee.

Winner - Alix Verge

Runner up - Alison Sharpe.

Platinum Singles, 20th - 22th May 2006

The numbers were down for this event this year with only 6 players, Peter Tavender, Nerida Taylor and Jonathan Bowen all from Canberra, Michael Walker from Bundanoon, Nick Macoun Killara and John Eddes Sutherland. The improved facilities at Tempe are appreciated by both players and management.

Jonathan Bowen, the winner, played some faultless breaks to win all his games to 26, falling short on at least 1 attempted triple peel. John Eddes, although outplayed by Jonathon in tight first match of the tournament, also played some faultless breaks to come second with 4 wins. Nerida Taylor, unfazed by the men, gave John a battle in their game and won 2 games to come third.

Dennis Faggotter, who came to observe, happily watched shots when an independent referee was requested. It is a shame that more up and coming players don’t come along and watch. Observing better play, is the best way to learn about making breaks, tactics and leaves.

It was a pleasure to manage this tournament.

NSW State Handicap - Beryl Chambers Memorial Trophy, 8th - 12th June 2006

The Beryl Chambers Trophy (State Handicap Event) was played at Chatswood Croquet Club in wearing weather over the Queens’ Birthday June weekend.

Saturday was sunny & cold. Sunday, overcast cold and wet, Monday was sunny for the finals but very cold.

3 Managers were used over the weekend - used as a learning process. Unfortunately only 10 out of 16 finalists came to Sydney for the final round, so 2 blocks of 5 played round robin matches Saturday and Sunday with an 8.30am start on Monday.

Ruther Wilson (Handicap 20) from Wagga, was delighted with her 2 wins. One game defeated Alan Honey (Queanbeyan, handicap 8, 26-6 ) Obviously Ruth knows how to use her bisques.

David Griffiths in Block A, pegged out in his 4 games to win his block, with Alan Honey, runner up. The deciding game in this block was very interesting, David took his black ball to the peg & Allan had red and yellow clips on rover, and set up with a rush to rover in corner 2. David missed a roquet with blue, Alan rushed yellow to rover, made rover with red, but missed the return roquet on yellow. David hit in with blue and went to the peg, winning 26-23.

In block B, semi - final, John Harris made an early break. Michael Bidencope, playing his second ball, red, failed to get position to run hoop 5, then narrowly missed wiring red from blue, so John was able to roquet red, and peg out to win 26-12.

The final was a very interesting match to watch, with John Harris pegging out.

Winner - John Harris 26
Runner up - David Griffiths 13

Thanks to Laurie Griffiths (Tournament Referee ) and the referees who helped Laurie over the weekend.

The lawns at Chatswood were true, and in very good condition, allowing good control of the ball. Some players still think a central draw would benefit the competition, as in regions we are still playing our own club members, or friends who we play regularly. The element of surprise in the draw has gone.

NSW Championships - Womens Open Singles, 7th - 9th July 2006

Twelve entries in the Women’s Singles at Mackey Park, Tempe looked like the largest and strongest field for some time but two withdrawals the day before (due to illness and work commitments) which necessitated a new draw and one more after the first day reduced the field to nine. It still meant some dour tussles and very close finishes. It was nice to see some new faces at this level - welcome to Alix and Alison and congratulations on your play.

Play was late finishing on the first day. One game finished in the dark and another had to be pegged down which meant an early start for them on Saturday morning.

The weather was fine but the mornings were COLD - so much so that Pam’s hands were still frozen at 11.00am (maybe that was a reaction from a recent return from Indonesia)

The winner was Chloe Aberley with seven wins and a triple peel. Robbie Stock and Alix Verge both finished with six wins but because Robbie had a higher net result she was declared the runner up on a count back.

Thanks must go to Jo McGrath and Margot Johnson for refereeing and to John Eddes for his assistance.

NSW Championships - Mens Open Singles, 14th - 17th July 2006

The Men’s Open Singles Championship was held at Tempe on 14th - 17th July. There were sixteen - four from metropolitan clubs and twelve nine from country regions. They were divided into two blocks of eight. With three lawns this meant that at least four competitors had a bye each time. At this level this made Mary Fernance’s job as referee much easier as there were capable people available to assist at all times. Lawns were designated only for the first game each day and from then on players were able to play as soon as a lawn and an opponent became available. This worked very well and meant that play was finished well before five each day.

Six triple peels were scored during the competition (Peter Landrebe 4, Tony Hall 1and Stephen Richards 1) It took Tim until his fifth game before he pegged out even after he assured me that he would finish each game in two hours. The new faces, Martyn and Alan acquitted themselves well and certainly learnt from their experience. On his first major tournament after back surgery Geof had two wins and five losses and still managed to finish with a net of +5.

Thanks are due to: -

Bronze Brooch, 7th - 11th August 2006

Whilst there were only 6 entrants in this competition and the range of handicaps larger than usual, it is a shame at this level, there are not more players prepared to take part. It is only by participating against other players, and in particular players from other clubs who are possibly stronger players, that you will improve your skills.

The weather was better than expected and the players are to be thanked for their help in setting up and putting away, as well as their readiness to get on with the games.

The winner Neil Hardie made some very good breaks of 7 to 10. Wall.Fernance, the runner up, also made some good breaks. Pat Goldrick had her good and bad days, just like most of us.

My thanks to Kath Coull, Betty Daniel and Alix Verge who helped me with the refereeing, Kath and Betty coming back to referee just one game each on the 3rd day.

NSW Championships - Open Doubles, 19th - 21st August 2006

This was a really pleasant three days! Good weather and really good company! Most people stayed for a barbeque after play on the Saturday night. There were thirteen pairs, eight from country regions and five from metropolitan clubs. The players were divided into two blocks - one of seven and one of six due to a late withdrawal. Games were very close to start with as by the end of the second round only one game had been pegged out. After that the combinations were more effective with Tim Murphy achieving a triple peel.

Some new combinations played this year with varying degrees of success. Nice to see Lydia and Margery - they were happy with their play and said they certainly learnt from the experience.

Congratulations to all players and especially to Stephen and Tim. Thank you Margot for organising the referees.

NSW Championships - Open Singles, 22nd - 27th August 2006

The Open Singles commenced on Tuesday 22nd August with one block of eight and one of seven to be played at Tempe and Eastwood. Both blocks played at the two venues and the players found that they had to make some adjustments to their play on the lawns at Eastwood.

In the Round Robin the winner of Block A was Jonathan Bowen (6 wins and the only triple peel of the tournament)) and the winner of Block B was Tim Murphy (5 wins). The top four from each block progressed to the Quarter Finals at Tempe and the remainder played in the Plate. One player withdrew leaving a Round Robin of six played over three days.

The Quarter Finals and onward were played as the best of three games. The final results were as follows:-

Open Singles - winner Tim Murphy, runner up John Levick
Y Event - winner Tony Hall, runner up Nerida Taylor
Plate - winner Alison Sharpe, runner up Nick Macoun

Congratulations to the winners and participants.

Once again there was a preponderance of players from country areas – eleven out of fifteen. In future Open events all play should commence at 8.00am each day. This means that players do not have to commute during the peak periods. To alleviate travelling for country members at the end of the competition three rounds should be played each day. One or two rounds on the last day would make life easier for those who have to travel.

On the last day we all ate very well as it was Mary and Wal’s 56th wedding anniversary. Well Done!! The players provided two cakes and Rosie Graham turned up with a HUGE one that put our efforts to shame

At the end of the tournament there were a few changes of handicap:-

Nerida Taylor 3 to 2.5
Jonathan Bowen 1 to 0.5
Michael Walker 1.5 to 2.5
Alison Sharpe 4 to 3.5

Gold Brooch, 4th - 6th September 2006

The gold brooch was played at Tempe from 4th to 6th September 2006, the players were lucky enough to have warm to hot days because, after the last games the weather turned from bad to very nasty.

There were several breaks made through out the tournament, Martyn Prins made a break of 9 with his first ball, his opponent, Nick Macoun congratulated him on his play, Martyn and Nick ended up playing half an hour after time was called , before Martyn ran a hoop to win the game. Alison Sharpe made a break of 8 and 11 in one of her games and went on to win 26 to 3, Alison played a very relaxed game and copy book croquet, it was so lovely to watch, Well done Alison.

All players are to be congratulated for their friendly and good spirits throughout the competition.

Congratulations to the winner Nick Macoun,

and to the runner up Alison Sharpe.

Thanks go to players for the setting up and putting away of the equipment each day also to Margot Johnson the Tournament referee and Dennis Faggotter for helping to referee.

Bronze Handicap Singles, 25th - 27th September 2006

The Bronze Handicap Singles event was played from 25th to 27th September 2006 in fairly good weather, with only four players, three from Sutherland and one from Sydney club.

One of the players, David Moody, has only been playing Association croquet for about eight weeks, with this being his first competition at Tempe, he played brilliantly, using his bisques wisely, playing the balls forward, good roquet shots and hoop getting, he also pegged out in one of his games and just missed pegging out in another, he made a small break of three, he made a couple of errors but he has learnt from them.

Chris Walker, who has played only two games at Tempe, one being a Pennants final, also had extremely good games, making two breaks of five and he also used his bisques to his advantage setting out the lawn, roqueting spot on and good hoop shots.

Then there is Marie Waterman and Margery Turtle, two players who enter in as many competitions as they can. Margery had two breaks of six and pegged out four of her five games, she also entered into the Open Doubles with a partner this year and played some of the top players. Margery said that she learnt a lot having played them, so hopefully more Bronze players will have a go next year. Then there is Marie, still enjoying her games and giving her opponents a run for their money and winning games.

Thanks go to all the referees who gave of their time for the players, also to the players for setting up the lawns and tidying up after the games.

Congratulations to the winner Margery Turtle,

and to the runner up David Moody

This event was held with 7 players.

There was no Tournament Referee and therefore no Referees with the exception of Margot Johnson on 2 days and Marie Waterman for 1 day.

Referees where are you? You are desperately needed. Please let Fay Stove know if and when you are available to help for any or all tournaments.

During the games the results showed that Michael Mills would possibly be the winner but Mac Thomson came from nowhere putting in a big effort and eventually won the Tournament with Michael Mills the runnerup.
