3 & Under Singles, 2nd - 3rd March 2013

The 3 & under AC singles was played on the weekend of March 2 & 3 with a disappointing small entry of only 8.

This was played in two initial blocks of 4 with the top two players in each block advancing to Superblock 1, effectively the finals play offs, and the other 4 players going into the consolation Superblock 2.

There were surprise results in Block A with Stephen Howes and John Levick beating Jim Nicholls, but given the final result perhaps the latter was not surprising in hindsight. John Levick scraped into superblock 1 by beating Stephen Howes 26-24 in a 3 ball finish and Charlotte Morgan was the other player from this block into the Superblock 1. Block B went according to expectations with Stephen Richards and Alan Walsh moving into Superblock 1.

The consolation Superblock 2 was won by Jim Nicholls.

The overall event winner in Superblock 1 was John Levick with Charlotte Morgan the runner up.

It was good to see John Levick playing association croquet after a long break and regaining his form in this version of the game.

Triple peels were done by Jim Nicholls (2) and Alan Walsh.

GC Division 2 Singles, 6th - 7th March 2013

After weeks of hearing that the weather was not going to be kind to us for the upcoming tournament we were greatly relieved to wake up on Monday morning to find brilliant sunshine, this was to continue for the rest of the tournament. The visiting players were welcomed to the beautiful Nowra croquet club, the courts and surrounds were in top condition thanks to the members who attended the working bee on the previous Tuesday and to Warren our mower man who takes great pride in presenting the courts in such a lovely condition.

The competition was closely contested with as many as four players equal after the first days play. Bernie McAlary (Wollongong) finished a close winner with 7 games net 18 from Lyn Dimech (Taree) 7 games net 16, third place went to Margaret Sawers (Nowra) 6 games net 15. All players voted the tournament an enjoyable success.

Thank you to all who came and helped setting up the courts each day, the ladies who provided lunches and all who at the end of the days helped to pack up, many hands make light work and in this instance we certainly had many willing helpers. Terry Abbott tournament referee assisted by his wife Irene worked tirelessly to ensure that the games ran smoothly. Thank you Terry and Irene

GC Division 2 Doubles, 4th - 5th March 2013

Nowra Croquet Club members provided fine weather, well groomed lawns, good food and lots of friendly helpers for the CNSW Golf Croquet Div 2 Doubles and Singles Tournaments (4-7 March 2013).

The number of participants was just short of last year’s entries. This meant players had fewer games to play and as a result they were not as exhausted as in 2012.

A Double Round Robin was held in the Doubles with 10 rounds being played over the two days allocated to the event. The standard of play was high and many games went to the 12th or 13th hoop.

The winners were reigning champions, John Pace and Robyn Compton from Maitland Croquet Club, who won 7 of their 10 matches. Three (3) teams finished on 6 wins and, for the first time, there was a draw for equal second. So, we have joint runners up - Brenton Chivers and Wayne Worrall (both from Nowra) and Brenda Wild (Mt Sugarloaf) and Tony McArthur (Sutherland).

Special thanks, from both the players and the organisers, to the referees, Terry and Irene Abbott who toiled away each day, and to Roger Evans who assisted for a day during the Doubles. Without the support of referees Tournaments such as these would be very much poorer and would probably have rule interpretation issues. Thanks again for your dedication to Croquet.

GC Division 3 Doubles, 13th - 15th March 2013

Sutherland Croquet Club hosted the Division 3 Doubles and Singles Championships on behalf of CNSW. There were 11 entrants in the Doubles Event and 13 entrants in the Singles Event, more than half of whom had been playing croquet for less than a year or were first time entrants in CNSW competitions.

I congratulate those players who took the plunge into competition and from the feedback we have received they found this both a satisfying experience and an excellent learning curve. As the tournament progressed it was evident that the players were benefiting from the learning curve as their tactics greatly improved over the days of the tournaments.

I would like to congratulate all players for the keenness they showed and their sportsmanship.

The doubles event was contested over 2 days & the singles event over 2 ½ days, All games were hard fought and in both events half the games were won either to 6 or 5.

Clubs represented were Hurstville, Jamberoo, Port Hacking, Sydney, Wollongong, Canberra & Sutherland.

Doubles Event
The winners were Maureen McCowan & Barbara Murray from Jamberoo, with 8 wins, three pairs were on 7 wins with only 2 hoops between second and fourth. The runners up on a countback were John Cole & Debra Morgan from Sutherland

Singles Event
The winner was Brenda Evans from Jamberoo with 10 wins. Congratulations Brenda as your next event will be as a Div 2 player. There were 2 players on 8 wins and on a countback John Cole was runner up beating Debra Morgan by 3 hoops.

Again I would like to congratulate the players for the spirit in which they played this competition

When a club runs an event over 5 days it is only successful because of the effort the club members put into the organisation of the event. I would like to thank the Sutherland members who set up and maintained the lawns, for those who worked tirelessly in providing and attending to our morning and afternoon teas and a special thank you for the effort that went into making lunches. This was a treat, not having to get up a bit earlier to make our own lunches.

We were very fortunate in having a full house of referees, with referees coming from Jamberoo, Canberra, Maitland, Sydney and of course our home grown referees, all ably led by our tournament referee.

At the end of the tournament, the players surprised the workers by presenting them with cakes decorated with croquet hoops and balls. The cakes looked really special and of course tasted yummy; we all enjoyed cake and cuppa at the end of the tournament.

NSW Mens Golf Croquet Singles Championships, 12th - 14th April 2013

In perfect sunny warm weather, 10 male combatants took to the lawns at 8am on Friday 12 April, ready for three (3) days of intense Golf Croquet Singles.

Playing six (6) matches per day they played a double round robin (with no finals series) - eager to maintain their first round result or to avenge their defeat.

From both players and management, sincere thanks go to the stalwart group known collectively as "The Referees", who, once again, came to help the Tournament Referee (Bev Smith) and to keep the players under control.

Overall, three days of hard work by all concerned. Many of the games were 7/6 or 7/5.

Result wise - we used Croquet Scores to give an almost current picture of the tussles. Computer buffs can access this site very easily.

Now to the nitty-gritty - The Winner, quite decisively was Joe Dimech (Taree) with 16 wins out of the 18 played. Runner up with 14 wins was Peter Freer (Canberra). John Levick (Newcastle) just nosed out John Compton (Maitland) for third place, both with 11 wins.

It was great to see several debutants taking up the challenge of Open Men’s Singles and hope they continue to play in CNSW tournaments.

Congratulations to the "Magnificent Ten" for giving their all. Good luck in future CNSW events.

NSW Golf Croquet Open Doubles, 19th - 22nd April 2013

Fine and sunny Friday 19 April saw the start of the round robin involving 10 doubles pairs. Each team played 6 matches on the first day, thoroughly enjoying the challenges faced.

Day 2, bigger challenges - what a horrible day - rain, rain, rain and wind!! Luckily there were only 3 matches to be played to complete the round robin format.

At the end of the 9 matches the winners were John Compton / Peter Smith (both Maitland), second were Nick Macoun (Killara)/ Mike Jenner (Individual), then came John Levick (Newcastle) / Pam Gentle (Maitland), with fourth position being Tony Hall (Canberra) / John Eddes (Sutherland).

Then to the Best of 3 games Semifinals. Compton and Smith fell to Hall and Eddes, while Macoun and Jenner were victors over Levick and Gentle.

The other 6 teams were invited to contest a consolation round robin event. Because of the uninviting weather 2 teams decided to go home and relax. The 4 remaining teams started their 3 matches but one went home early - so really a non-event happened.

On Sunday, a lovely, cool, sunny morning greeted the Finalists. They were there to play the Best of 3 Games, untimed. The first game was won 7/6 after over 1 and a half hours. The second games only took about an hour - 7/2.

The winners of this marathon event were Nick Macoun and Mike Jenner with Tony Hall and John Eddes worthy runners up.

Once again thanks go to the band of referees who supported the event. Each day saw at least 2 referees supervising one or two lawns at a time for every session. A great job! Thanks very much!! We even had spectators on each of the three days.

If only Day 2 had been better weatherwise, this would have been a great tournament as everyone was keen to show their Doubles skills. Hopefully, 2014 will be as well attended by players, officials and spectators.

Fransted Trophy, 23rd - 26th April 2013

After two unsuccessful attempts in 2011 & 2012 to run this association croquet event it was very pleasing that 15 entries were received this year. I hope that this signals an increased interest in association croquet events and this one particularly in 2014. A special welcome was given to two players, Diane Scott and Peter Montague playing in their first CNSW competition and to Roberta Flint and Charles Britton who made their first Tempe appearances.

Three blocks of five players played an initial round robin with the high handicapped players winning a share of the games, as should be the case in handicap games. Many of the games were very close with 9 of the 30 games decided by 3 points or less. All of the players except one won games and several quarter final positions were decided by a count back. Going into the last round of the block matches only two players were guaranteed a spot in the quarterfinals while only three were out of the running, so 10 players were vying for the last 6 positions which kept the interest and pressure on.

The quarterfinals saw Richard Thomas easily beat Wall Fernance as Wall ran out of steam after beating Tony Hall in the morning. Greg Deakin beat Tony Hall, David Stanton beat Graham Maynard who was the high handicapper off 20 and did very well to get to the QF, and John Eddes beat John Bartrop.

In the semi finals Greg Deakin beat Richard Thomas 20-17 in another close game and John Eddes beat David Stanton 26-13

The final opened with a good standard of play but fell away a bit as the effort of 4 days of solid play started to have an effect. John Eddes beat Greg Deakin 19-16 in another close finish.

A successful competition with beautiful weather throughout and thoroughly enjoyed by the players.

Golf Croquet Division 2 Pennants - Finals, 20th June 2013

Despite expecting rain, we were fortunate to have a nice wintery, but sunny day.

The hoops were put in by the yet-to-become Tournament Manager (John Compton) by 8.30am, ready for the teams to join us, coming by car and train for The Big Event.

Referees (Bev Smith, Peter Smith and Wendy Fothergill) toiled away all day - Thanks very much for being interested and available - Your work is greatly appreciated by all of us.

The four teams represented were Nowra, Wollongong, Mosman and Maitland Black. After the welcome and initial instructions from the Tournament Manager the teams set off for combat in the Semifinals - Nowra vs Mosman, Wollongong vs Maitland Black.

At the end of the Semifinals Nowra and Wollongong had been defeated and thus Mosman and Maitland Black took to the lawns for The Final. A really good tussle in all matches!

Congratulations to Mosman (the victors) - 2 matches to 1, 4 games all, 44 hoops to 48. Commiserations to Maitland Black.

Hopefully all 2013 Participating Clubs and more clubs / teams will embrace Golf Crouqet Pennants in 2014.

Golf Croquet Division 3 Pennants - Finals, 27th June 2013

At Tempe our day was overcast, but luckily none of the forecast rain visited us. The lawns were all set by 8.30am by Peter Smith and John Compton ready for our competitors to arrive and practise on the Tempe lawns as none (or hardly any) had played there before. Bev Smith had organized a contingent of Referees (Carol Hayes, Kath Coull, John Eddes, John Compton, Peter Smith and herself) so that each match had a referee. This was wise as there were a variety of faults committed by our eager Division 3 combatants in their quest for a hoop. Thanks again to the referees for your commitment to our Golf Croquet players.

The four teams - Canberra, Sutherland White, Jamberoo White and Killara - began their semifinals at the scheduled 9.30am starting time. After the lucky dip draw the semifinals were: Canberra vs Sutherland White and Jamberoo White vs Killara. Both matches were very close, with the outcome being dependent on the Doubles. The Jamberoo / Killara Doubles match (of 3 close seamless games) went for nearly 5 hours whilst the Canberra / Sutherland match was just a bit shorter - very tight, highly contested matches.

Then off to the Finals for Canberra and Jamberoo White. Once again the matches were highly competitive with the two deciding matches finishing within 5 minutes of each other just after 5pm. Luckily we didn’t need to use car lights to continue play in the dark.

So, who won? The Division 3 Golf Croquet Pennants winners were Canberra, with Jamberoo White the runners up - 2 matches to 1, 5 games to 2, 44 hoops to 36.

An excellent contest which kept the spectators on the edge of their seats. Congratulations to the groups from Canberra, Sutherland and Jamberoo who, decked in club colours, came to support their teams.

We are looking forward to 2014 Golf Croquet Pennants.

NSW GC Bronze Medal, 5th - 7th July 2013

And The Winner Is...... Steven Harden (Tamworth) - by 4 net hoops - from runner up Peter Landrebe (Cammeray) !!

The original 10 invitees became 9 after Rosemary Landrebe’s work commitments made it impossible for her to play the first two rounds.

Three glorious-weather days enabled the combatants to enjoy the challenge of six rounds of play each day. The longest game took 1 hour 50 minutes, with the shortest about 30 minutes.

The spectators enjoyed the on court struggles (as did many of the Concordia Club patrons on Saturday and Sunday). Many of the matches were 7/6 or 7/5 - nice close results. Thanks again to the keen referees (Bev, Carol, Wendy, Kath, Jacky, Rayna, Chris, Pat and Fay) who once again generously gave their time and expertise.

We all wish Steven the best of luck, good hooping and straight roquets when he takes on the Bronze Medal holders from the other 5 States in August at Macquarie City Croquet Club for the prestigious Gold and Silver Medals.

Golf Croquet Division 1 Pennants - Finals, 15th - 17th July 2013

Congratulations to the six teams (Forster, Maitland, Cammeray, Manly, Sydney and Sutherland) who fought out the Division 1 Pennants. Originally there were 8 teams entered but Canberra and Illawarra had to withdraw for various reasons. We hope to see them in 2014.

Each team had played one match prior to the 3 Day Carnival held 15-17 July at CNSW Headquarters (Tempe). Competition was very focused and all players enjoyed the challenge of playing other very able teams.

Matches were hard fought - often the scores did not reflect the closeness of the games (which were Best of 3 format). Some games were completed quickly whilst a couple took the 4 hour time allocation.

Our spectators enjoyed watching the battles and applauded good shots from all teams.

Thanks again to those intrepid people collectively known as The Referees - Bev Smith, Wendy Fothergill, Pat Johnston, Elaine Coles, Ron Johnstone, Ros Johnstone, John Compton and Peter Smith.

The players appreciated having referees for their matches - it really reinforced the importance of the competition. Well Done, Refs!!

The winners, for the 6th Consecutive year, and going through undefeated were the players from Maitland. The tussle for runner up resulted in Sutherland edging out Cammeray. Congratulations to Maitland and Sutherland.

We look forward to an even bigger (and better) competition in 2014 and encourage other clubs to enter a Division 1 team.

Association Pennants, Finals 23rd - 25th July 2013

The Pennants season for 2013 has now been completed, with a total of 35 matches and 119 games being played in four divisions. All games were played in good spirit, and the weather was kind to us on most occasions. Thanks to all who took part, players, referees, coaches and venue managers. Results of all matches played were put onto Croquet Scores within hours of the completion of the match, and full details can be seen there. Thanks to all team captains for their prompt advice of results.

Bronze Pennants (Winner Cammeray 1, runner-up Strathfield)

Seven teams took part in this competition, from Cammeray (2 teams), Chatswood, Hurstville, Killara, Manly and Strathfield. Teams were made up of a mixture of experienced pennants players and newcomers, and from all reports the newcomers found the experience well worth while, though occasionally a little daunting.

With one round to play, Manly (who had the bye in the last round) had won 4 matches and lost 2, having won 11 games and lost 7. They were in the running to win the competition, along with Cammeray 1, Hurstville and Strathfield. Strathfield had won 4 matches and only lost 1, winning 11 games and losing 4. Cammeray 1 had won 3 matches and lost 2, but also had an 11-4 games record. Hurstville, also were 3-2 on matches, but 8-7 on games. The stage was set for an exciting last round. Strathfield looked to be the likely winners, as they were playing Killara who had only had one match win. If Killara could beat Strathfield 3-0 and Hurstville could beat Cammeray 1 3-0, all four teams would finish on 4 matches to 2, and on 11 games to 7.

Luckily for Cammeray 1, they were able to win all 3 games against Hurstville, and Killara put in a mighty effort to beat the strong Strathfield team 3-0, leaving Cammeray 1, Manly and Strathfield all with 4 match wins, but with Cammeray 1 ahead with 14 games won, 3 ahead of both Manly and Strathfield. Strathfield was declared runner-up with better net hoops than Manly, also having beaten Manly when they played. Every team won at least one match, and all teams are looking forward to doing battle again in 2014. Hopefully then we can see some teams from the country taking part.

Silver Pennants (winner Mosman, runner-up Strathfield)

Only three teams, Chatswood, Mosman and Strathfield, entered this competition which was very disappointing given the strength of this level in recent years. More disappointing was the withdrawal of Chatswood a few days before the competition was to start. Mosman and Strathfield played a home-and-away series, with Mosman winning both matches to win the event.

Gold Pennants (winner Cammeray, runner-up Killara)

Five teams entered this competition, from Cammeray, Killara, Maitland, Mosman and Warrawee. This was Warrawee’s first time playing Pennants, and they enjoyed the experience even though they were not able to win a match. The opening round saw Killara host Cammeray in what turned out to be the decisive match. Killara won the doubles, and Chris Lavina had a good win against John Bartrop. The match was in the balance with the game between Greg Deakin and Neil Hardie being the decider. With only a few minutes to go Greg was ahead, but Neil managed to grab victory after the bell to win 24-22. Both teams were undefeated for the rest of the competition, with Cammeray winning and Killara as runners-up. If you want to see a grown man cry, remind Greg when you see him that if he had won that game, Killara would have won the competition!

Premier Pennants (winner Canberra, runner-up Cammeray)

After an absence of 5 years, the Premier Pennants took place again this year, with teams from Cammeray and Canberra taking part. The format of this competition is quite different to the other grades, with each match consisting of 10 games, two doubles and 8 singles. Each player in the 4-man team plays one game of doubles and two games of singles on the day.

Canberra hosted Cammeray early in July, and won 8 games to 2. Cammeray’s two wins were upset wins by Stephen Howes and Neil Hartley, against the more highly ranked Charlotte Morgan and Nick Chapman. The return match at Cammeray on 4 August was won by Cammeray 7 games to 3, leaving Canberra the overall winner 11 games to 9. A most enjoyable event, with some excellent croquet being played. Hopefully we can see at least one other team taking part next year.

NSW GC Handicap Doubles and Singles, 14th - 20th September 2013

The NSW Golf Croquet Handicap Doubles and Singles were played at Port Macquarie and Taree Croquet Clubs.

Doubles

The CNSW Handicap Doubles was played from 14th September until 17th with 18 pairs divided into two blocks of 9. The handicaps ranged from 1 to 10 with some pairs giving away up to 9 extra turns. The top 2 pairs in each block qualified for the semi-finals.

Block A turned out to be a very tight affair with Don Rankin and Bill Munns (Mt Sugarloaf) tying on 6 wins from 8 with Elaine and Peter Coles (Forster). As net hoops were equal Elaine and Peter qualified first as they had won the block match.

Block B proved to be equally close with Maitland Muddlers John Compton and peter Smith finishing with 7 wins to top the block. Janine and Chris Crellin (Taree) gained second spot in a count back from South West Rocks pair Paul Pickett and Ian Gannaway.

In two tight semi-finals Coles & Coles and Compton & Smith qualified for the final. The final became a nail biter with the Coles duo edging out the Maitland duo 7/6, 7/6, the match finishing just before the rain set in. Compton had the opportunity to take the match into a third but his half metre clearing shot at 13 jumped over the target ball leaving Peter with a simple hoop shot. Peter said thank you finished the match.

Singles

The CNSW Handicap Singles was played from the 17th to the 20th September with 24 competitors divided into two blocks of 12. Each block played one day at Taree and one day at Port Macquarie before the finals were played at Port. Clubs represented were Mt sugarloaf, Sawtell, South West Rocks, Taree, Port Macquarie, Forster, Branxton, Sutherland, Toronto and Maitland.

In Block A, NSW State member Joe Dimech (Taree) sailed through his matches winning 10 from 11. His only loss was to block runner-up Rod Dillon (Branxton) whose handicap dropped from 10 to 8 over the rounds. Peter Coles (Forster) and Brenda Wild (Mt Sugarloaf) made up the top four.

Block B was dominated by Bill Munns (Toronto) with 10 wins. He was followed by John Pace (Maitland), Sandy Coutts (Forster) and Paul Mitchell (Port Macquarie) all on 7 wins. All 4 players reduced their handicap during block play.

Paul Mitchell provided the upset of the ¼ Finals defeating Joe 7/4, 7/6. Peter Coles defeated John Pace, Sandy defeated Rod Dillon and Bill struggled to defeat Brenda Wild.

Favourites and form players Peter and Bill won through to the final. The final was an enthralling and high quality contest with fortunes fluctuating wildly in game one. Peter had one extra turn each game and used them productively although desperately in game 1. Bill ran away to a big lead in game one leading 6/4 and Peter overshooting 11. At this stage Bill had not missed anything that he had aimed at and some he hadn’t. After some manouvering Peter took his extra turn and deliberately jawed in 11 from 45 degrees and 2 metres – a brave shot. Peter won 11 but 12 turned into a real contest with this hoop taking 20 minutes. Bill had missed one roquet at 11, he now missed another at 12 and one at 13. Both proved catastrophic as Peter ran both to finish 7/6 up. Peter was dominant in game two taking the match in 2 games 7/6, 7/4.

CNSW wishes to thank Port Macquarie and Taree Croquet Clubs for allowing this competition to be played on their lawns. Thanks also to all the club members who set up lawns, set up hoops, prepared lunches, made cakes and slices, recorded and refereed. These competitions cannot run without willing helpers. Once again the NSW Handicap Competitions proved to be a great success in a country setting.
