NSW Championships - Open Doubles
20-22 Aug 2005
Tempe

The Open singles have been and gone with Tony hall winning his second open title of the year. Tony is currently the Queensland Open singles champion. Well done Tony.

The main surprise packet of the tournament was Tim Murphy from Nowra who went through to the final undefeated. He lost only one game and that was to Pam Gentle in the Quarter Finals before going down to Tony. Tim for his trouble lost a couple off his handicap. About time too!

The Quarter Finals, Semi finals and finals were the best of three with the games being untimed with the proviso that they finished before dark. It was a great innovation and thoroughly enjoyed by the competitors. There should be more of it.

The other two surprise packets were Ron Johnston and Pam Gentle. Pam was knocked out in the Quarter Finals but Ron made it to the semis and gave Tim a run for his money. Both I am pleased to say also lowered their handicaps.

The ‘Y’ was eventually won by Geof McDonald after a terrific battle with Pam. It was a pity one of us had to lose.

John Eddes came away winning the Plate on a count back from John Levick. I am told there was good croquet played at Chatswood.

The only blight on what had been a good tournament was the visitors to the Concordia club who treated our Number 3 lawn as a rugby field and the usual loud music coming from the club itself. What a place to hold a state titles championship.
