Young Croquet Club
The Young Spring Carnival was held from the 1st to 5th Oct. at the club courts in Binalong Street Young.
Sadly, the number of entrants, 16 in all for the association event was down but with the inclusion of two blocks of doubles and a play off for the top pair plenty of games were played.
Players travelled from Bathurst, Boolaroo, Canberra, Dubbo, Orange and Wagga Wagga, to compete in the event. It was played as a handicap round robin competition with a winner and runner up in each block.
Sylvia Shipp was the Tournament Referee with Gillian Powell and Yvonne Brereton the only other referees but with willing suitable people to assist things ran smoothly.
Several peg-outs were made by Leon and Dorothy O’Mally and Annette McManus
The results are as follows:-
BLUE BLOCK Peter Lloyd (Wagga) & Chris Palazzi (Young /Cowra), Runners up Yvonne Brereton (Canberra) & Alison Colla (Orange)
RED BLOCK Leon O’Mally (Dubbo) & Norm Palazzi ( Young / Cowra), Runners up Annette McManus (Bathurst) & Helen James (Orange)
FINAL Leon O’Mally and Norm Palazzi
BLUE BLOCK Leon O’Mally (Dubbo), Runner up Annette McManus (Bathurst)
RED BLOCK Peter Lloyd (Wagga Wagga), Runner up John Grattan ( Canberra)
GREEN BLOCK Janet Beasley (Dubbo), Runner up Dorothy O’Mally (Dubbo)
Play became quite a challenge on Friday afternoon following a violent wind and rainstorm with players having to use a longer swing to try to reach their target ball over the puddles and wet areas. Later the rain fell again with two players continuing until dark before hastening away to shed wet clothes and shower before the Carnival dinner.
From all reports everyone enjoyed themselves and complementary remarks were passed. I must say, as the Tournament manager, the success of the carnival was due to the wonderful team of association and golf croquet members who worked together to achieve this. My thanks to all who helped including the generosity of the sponsors!
