|54th Association Croquet Carnival|
29 Jul - 2 Aug 2009
Port Macquarie Croquet Club
Port Macquarie’s 54th Association Croquet Carnival was held from Wednesday 29th July to Sunday 2nd August, 2009. A field of 24 entrants included players from Sawtell, Taree, Bundanoon, Killara, Urunga, Forster, Lismore, Narooma, EDSAAC, Canberra and Toowoomba as well as our two local entrants.
A new format for the warm-up doubles devised by Larry Bryant with a creative use of scrabble tiles for a random draw, had everyone playing four 70 minute sessions through the day with a different partner each time. This put everyone in a good mood and good form for the singles play. This was four round robin blocks of advanced play with Jim Hicks as tournament referee.
Robin Shenton did well, winning against some higher rated opponents. However his decision to peg out a ball early against John Hardy backfired as John was able to keep his 2 balls wired to Robin’s 1 after every turn. John finally won a cat-and-mouse struggle 26-13.
Barbara McTiernan continues to power ahead, pegging out every game and achieving a new handicap of 4. Margaret Leese is way better than her new handicap of 10!
A carnival dinner was held on the Thursday night and finger food was provided at the presentation at the end of play on the Sunday afternoon. With homemade soups and slices and continuous idyllic weather it truly was a very relaxed and enjoyable event.
