Spring Carnival
7-11 Oct 2009
Young Croquet Club

Margaret Sawers (Nowra) and Dennis Shipp (EDSACC)

The Young Spring Carnival was held from the 7th to 11th Oct. at the club courts in Binalong Street Young.

The number of entrants, 19 in all for the association event was up a little compared with last year which was pleasing. The number of events on the N.S.W. calendar, some of which just clash or are held shortly after has some bearing on this.

Players travelled from Bathurst, Boolaroo, Cheltenham, Cowra, EDSA, Jamberoo, Narooma, Nowra, Orange, Sutherland and Wagga Wagga, to compete in the event.

It was played as a handicap round robin competition with a winner and runner up in each block.

John Read, Robyn Shenton, Margaret Sawers and Alison Colla all pegged out in some of their games.

Block A winner John Read (Orange) runner up David Simmonds (Jamberoo)
Block B winner Annette McManus (Bathurst) runner up Margaret Sawers (Nowra)
Block C winner Helen James (Orange) runner up Norman Palzzi (Cowra)

We were pleased to see two new members of the Dubbo Club who called in to learn more about the game and Peter Freer from the Canberra club. Peter was on the move before heading off to play in two other carnivals. He took tickets in our wonderful raffle of local produce and remarked as he left that he would be waiting for a telephone call. He did win it!!

Sylvia Shipp was the Tournament Referee with John Cook, John Read, Mary and Wall Fernance referees; David Simmonds and Robyn Shenton umpires and with willing suitable people to assist things ran smoothly.

Playing conditions were not pleasant most of the time with a bitter wind blowing and at times, short showers. Wet weather clothes were in order to help with these problems and every available heater both indoors and outside were turned on to give some relief On Sunday it was coats off for the remaining sessions.

The Carnival Dinner was held at the Commercial Hotel where all enjoyed a wonderful roast meal and relaxed after the cold day at the courts.

From all reports everyone enjoyed themselves and complementary remarks were passed. I must say, as the Tournament manager, the success of the carnival was due to the wonderful team of association and golf croquet members who worked together to achieve this. My thanks to all who helped including the generosity of the many sponsors!
