2017 WCF World GC Championship

The 2017 WCF World GC Championship was held at Cairnlea in Melbourne, Feb 25th - March 5th. Eight NSW affiliates played in the 80 strong field with the top 4 players from each block of 10 winning through to the knockout phase of the competition.

Jamie Gumbrell and Charlie Sharpe, fresh from their World Under 21s competition at the same venue, performed well in what was an extraordinarily high standard. There were no easy matches in the block rounds and every win - any win - was a spectacular achievement.

2 NSW players made it through to the knockout. Alison Sharpe drew current World AC Champion and multiple World GC semi-finalist Stephen Mulliner and put on a show of calm and consistent GC, narrowly losing the match in 3 games.

Peter Landrebe, after scraping past young, hard hitting Ned Wilson from SA 7-6 in their third game, went on to beat ex-champion Mohamed Nasr in the next round - only to come up against the astonishing NZ teenager (and new under 21 World Champion) Felix Webby in the quarter final. Felix smashed through to a 7-5, 7-6, 7-0 win.
